As part of TEDx ARISE in 2024,
we asked the community...
What do Asian-Australians wish for?
If you have a daughter, son, niece, nephew
what is your ONE WISH for them as they grow up in Australia?
To be free to be who they are
To live life to its fullest potential
To enjoy their life and achieve dreams
To have liberty and equal access to opportunities
To have equal opportunities as anyone in the country to thrive.
To feel they have limitless possibilities in how they shape their own path
To know that they are enough
To dream and live to be whatever they want to be
To be capable to change the world if they want to
To live a long, happy and productive life and benefit themselves and others.
To be resilient
To a global citizen, without forgetting identity roots.
To grow into joyful, compassionate and confident individuals who inspire others
Identity, Authenticity, Belonging:
To become who they truly are, not who they're expected to be
To find out and understand who they are, where they come from and what do they really want.
To not to feel embarrassed or anxious about racial identity
To learn our mother tongue at school
To feel proud to be Vietnamese Australian
To embrace their dual identity and contribute to society
To have a community of like-minded individuals to support them
To embrace the diversity around them.
To feel proud of their mixed heritage
To be seen as an important asset to society.
To grow up in a society that respects and values diverse identities
To feel seen and respected
To be free to pursue our dreams without feeling limited by stereotypes and societal expectations of what it means to be "Australian".
To feel a deep sense of belonging and to cherish their cultural roots.
To feel like they belong as part of a family, a community and a multicultural society
To feel connected to the wider community, including those outside of their ethnic and cultural community
To embrace a multicultural identity. To understand with a different lens on what it is to be Indonesian
To be encouraged and free to discover to unapologetically BE themselves. To offer their unique gifts to be the wayshowers that activate and amplify others in the world.
To have diversity and pluralism as a core part of the Australian identity.
To be celebrated and valued
To have equal opportunities
To be recognised that they are different in a good way
To grow up in a kind community-minded society
To be indistinguishable from any other Australian
To not feel they have to go overseas to fulfill dreams of innovation and entrepreneurship
To feel like they belong with representations of their voices
To have everyone in Australia be given the hope, desire, and support to flourish.
